My plan of seeking out small windows of time each day for more mini art and junk journaling projects has fallen by the wayside a little.

It’s been a busy few weeks with extra things relating to school for my littles, birthdays to plan, juggling school breaks, work deadlines and all the rest of life’s layers!

Whenever I do get a chance to create my goal has been to create with a ‘use what you have’ type mindset which ensures my hoarded stash of vintage supplies gets put to good use!

It always feels so mysterious to me using pieces from the past. We may never know the full story behind a handwritten note or the true meaning behind a piece of random ephemera we hold in our hand . . .

I just love to have these treasures within my art and junk journals and I love to use them to add context and meaning to my own pages. Making these old things ‘new again’.

Such as this sturdy folded map I purchased quite a while ago. I had a little tinker with a few of the pages that were nearly already falling apart and I just had to make a few snips so that the folded map settled into a concertina type book arrangement.

This sturdy map felt like the perfect foundation for a fun little art journal, something that could hold both stories and textures of the past with hints of my ’now’.

I therefore couldn’t resist getting lost in this little book with some collage and it even found its way through the sewing machine too . . .

Now that it’s complete there’s something special about the way it folds now, the weight of it in my hands, those quiet stories tucked inside. It’s no longer just a map.

As you’ll see from my process video, one small magazine clipping from one of my favourite European publications helped me set the tone for the story that I wanted to tell and I think that’s where the heart of this journal really began.
