Did you know the second Saturday of May is World Collage Day?
World Collage Day is an annual, international celebration of collage which always falls on the Second Saturday of May. This year that’s today, 10th May 2025.
It was Initiated by Kolaj Magazine in 2018 and you can read more about that here.
I find this day especially meaningful and interesting. Just like life, collage is layered, and textured, and can be both messy and beautiful at the same time. I find it so soothing and also love to weave it into my Memory Keeping creative processes too.
I’ve been filling my sketchbooks with a variety of collage for a couple of years now, here are a couple of my spreads.
Where the lines blur
In previous posts, I’ve talked about the line between scrapbooking and art journaling blurring and over the years I have been finding my own sweet spot that I keep coming back to, where categories merge together, where these lines blur if you like.
Scrapbooking doesn’t always have to be just about preserving memories, and collage doesn’t have to be just about assembling paper. Storytelling can meet with layers and textures, and just like Collage, it’s about the little things we choose to keep.
And that results in pages that feel lived in. Honest, messy, beautiful and always uniquely yours.
I love how adopting a collage approach in memory keeping can add hidden meanings to a page such as using elements, numbers and found words that hold personal meaning to the creator but may otherwise go unnoticed by the viewer - so many different things can have a metaphorical value.
If you’ve ever felt caught between wanting to document your life and wanting to just make something, this in-between space might be somewhere fun to start.
It’s common for me to make scans of my art and then digitise them for inclusion in my portfolio of products. Lynn also has many Mixed Media Designs that lean into collage and our collaborative ‘Hear My Voice’ Brand lends itself to those types of page designs where art and memory keeping blend together or blur the lines and are fab for collage too.
This following page took me just five minutes to complete thanks to ready made art elements and ready made collage papers from my ‘Sinopia’ Collection.
Here’s a before and after, the pre-made collage paper, then, with my photo added, and a few other elements from the Sinopia Collection layered in between the paper and the photo layers.
Here’s a fun page from Lynn with Collage vibes using our Hear My Voice Balancing Collection.
