Thank you to everyone who joined us over January on the “These Moments Matter” journey.

Running a whole month of challenges wasn’t something we planned to do, especially with all the family and work challenges already in place over December and January!

But with the postponement of the iconic ‘MOC’ (month of challenges) at The Lilypad we decided to jump in and go for it. And we are very glad we did. Seeing and sharing your amazing layouts, and engaging with you as part of a new little community, was inspiring.

So much so that it inspired us to include in our bonus content subscription more creative prompts, alongside product and chat - which you can read about here:

Hopefully, with the future of The Lilypad looking bright under new management, we will all be challenged in a fresh and new Month of Challenges next January - but meanwhile we can all create together here, as well as with our regular challenges at the store.

A LITTLE OR A LOT

Every month at The Lilypad, all the designers are given a colour palette to work with to create the BYOC releases (‘Build your own collection”).

It’s a fun push to create, and often to come up with something that we otherwise wouldn’t have made.

This month’s colours are a bit different from what we are normally drawn to, but it was the spur to creating two collections, which have been released today.

Lynn went bold with a collection inspired by a favourite inner city suburb in the Australian city of Melbourne.

Full of grunge textures, graffiti and urban-inspired imagery, it sparked a series of layouts celebrating urban adventures using the bold pink, orange and green paints. Because sometimes it’s fun to go big and go bold, especially if you have quite a ‘strong’ photo to hold its own against that.

Note, though, that on the two single photo layouts she clustered all the paint and fun elements together leaving ample space as a contrast. And to make the photo of her daughter in Barcelona pop even more and ‘match’ the bold colourful paint, she layered the paint over it, blending it on and also upping the contrast and saturation of the photo.

Rachel, meanwhile, created the beautiful “Better Together” collection, with a much calmer and more restful feel thanks to the use of mostly neutral colours paired with muted, pretty hues of the pink and orange.

A perfect example of using just a little colour in a thoughtful way are these lovely pages by Kayla and Sheri, where they have matched the sparingly-used colour with the clothing in the photos.

Instead of competing for attention, the photos are automatically the centre of attention:

And on this page by Olga, the story is reinforced and very much the heart of the page because both the sparing use of colour and the dramatic pops of black are on the word strips and number tags.
