Discover | Fun ways with threads & words
Using messy threads and stitches and "found words" to make mixed media digital pages.
I just got back from a trip to see my youngest graduate, meeting up with my mother for the event. Her hand luggage was mostly taken up with plastic bags containing a trove of old family photos and memorabilia recently sent over from the UK by her sister.
That included this gem of my Nan chatting to a crow. I can imagine her pretending to ask it for directions as she explored wherever she was visiting, in her ‘going out’ clothes complete with hat and gloves. I know I will create with it again, along with all the other photos. For this page I decided to have fun layering a title over the photo and framing it with messy stitching.
Use the stitches enabled me to highlight and ‘ground’ the photo, without the bulk of a frame which would not have matched the airy, slightly transparent hand drawn title.
I also used a pre-existing natural ‘photo spot’ on a paper that Rachel made.
I picked the lettersize version of the paper, popped it onto another 12x12 paper from the same collection and rotated it 90 degrees. And that gave me the perfect base for my page, needed only those threads and stitches to further emphasise the photo and the adding of elements and text.
I recently shared with our premium subscribers lots of ways to use “found words” on our creations. That came with a video of creating this page below (Me as ‘Orphan Annie’, as my Nan wrote on the back of the photo!)
“Found words” can be the words you find on the backs of photos, as in my two layouts below, but also the ‘snippets’ of old text we include in our kits, and words found on signs and billboards.
You can also see how I struggle not to use threads on any page!
They have so much energy and are perfect for creating connections between elements on a page …
For my layouts I’ve been using the ‘Discover’ Project Kit.
This was gifted to premium subscribers several weeks ago, and is now available for purchase at The Lilypad and Oscraps. 1
Included are 110 individual elements, 20 papers in both square and letter size orientations, along with printable sheets and 4 bonus printable collage papers - making it perfect for both digital and hybrid projects.
The stitches I used on my first layout (my Nan asking directions of a crow!) are from the fun “Messy Threads No.9” set from Rachel, which are new and on sale this weekend.
Take care that you don’t already own them before you purchase, as they were free with $12 purchases during Rachel’s birthday Sale last weekend.
Creative Team Member and Polly Christa also created a page combining Messy Threads No.9 with the Discover Kit. She journals about how she google maps new areas whilst travelling to discover new things and places of exploration.
