WELCOME TO OUR WORLD, BY RACHEL
Bird spotting has quickly become a huge part of our lives thanks to Keaton’s new found passion and this last weekend we visited our local RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) Nature Centre.
I have lots of photos to scrap from our visit, but for now, I wanted to scrap one of the photos of my two little ones in the ‘hideout’ looking through the binoculars.
The Kit I used, ‘Hear My Voice Inviting’ was just perfect for the vision I had. I wanted to recreate the cosy and dark hideout nook and that feeling of being surrounded by nature.
I quickly found elements that I knew would be ideal for my page such as the ‘Welcome to Our World/Life’ word art which I saw as a wee little message from the birds and other creatures to encourage the children to come and take a peek at us, you are welcome here . . . to the subtle Faux postage stamp with the ‘Wonder’ text - I manipulated this element into a frame and think it works so well as Mackenzie is slightly in awe with her lips parted, taking a gasp with that first look through the viewfinder. Finally the ‘you are invited and RSVP’ phrase on the ephemera strip was a sweet finishing touch.
I wandered into this creative process with an experimental approach and whilst I didn’t record my process from the start, I popped the camera on at the end and I’ll try and backtrack and explain to you my process which I think will be helpful as there are several ‘stash stretching’ tips along the way that I think will be useful for you.
At the start of the video I introduce it as a ‘mini tutorial’ but it turned into quite a long video in the end, apologies!
Digital Assets are from our huge ‘Hear My Voice’ Series, a growing portfolio of Mixed Media Papers, Elements and Templates of which ‘Inviting’ is on Sale today - see more details about that at the end of the post.
COOKING UP A PAGE, BY LYNN
Page design is a bit like cooking. Sometimes you just throw everything in without much of a plan, to see how it turns out. Other times you follow a recipe, whether a new one inspired by something you’ve seen or a tried and true formula of your own.
And sometimes it’s fun to use a readymade base that you can tweak and personalise to get lots of different results.
I like to think of templates like that - or as a ‘springboard’ to a final page you love.
Most of my templates include built in extras such as epoxies or glass buttons, tags, tape, paint etc. The “This Endures” template duo includes all of the above! All I needed to do for this page was recolour the tape and the paint to suit, and add some extra fun stuff in the form of leaves, another glass button and a text brush.
I chose to desaturate the photo to keep the focus on my little face, and used the tan colour of the tag, complemented with some greens in the form of leaves and the other glass tag. (Essentially referencing the green of the park that is in the photo).
So even though templates do a lot of the work there is still a lot of scope and skill involved to use them to create a visually pleasing and unique page that complements the photo(s) you are using.
Look for the items that you can easily recolour (such as paint) and either pick a colour from your photo OR chose a complementary colour to a prominent colour in your photo.
And then add extra paint and small elements that fit the theme and feel of the photos.
You can see the different results in the pages below that I made using the very same template set:

I love reading about how you both scrap and "think" about design. I read everything and often try to implement what you talk about in my pages. But here is the kicker... I don't "think"... I feel. I don't know if it's right, wrong, or indifferent. I don't know if it makes sense in "design" so to speak. I just put things on the page, move them around... and see how it feels. But actual thinking about the what or why of how I do it ... it's rare for me.
